EASTLAND’S $575 million redevelopment is finally going ahead and retail giant David Jones will open a store at the Ringwood shopping centre.   QIC Global Real Estate managing director Steven Leigh made the official announcement at the demolition site this afternoon.

The works will see Eastland expand by 50 per cent to 127,000 sq m and will include a new town centre for Ringwood, new library, major retailers and 150 new specialty stores.

Mr Leigh said it had taken 10 years for the plans to be finalised, but was “very excited” the redevelopment would now go ahead.

“A population of 2.5 million people live within a 30-minute drive-time of this shopping centre, and they generate an annual retail expenditure of over $32 billion,” Mr Leigh said.

“It will be more than just a place to shop. It will be a world-class destination where people have access to exceptional retailers, they can also enjoy premium dining, entertainment and social experiences.”

Premier Denis Napthine said the centre was a great development for the east.

“It’s a great vote of confidence in the future of our retail,” Dr Napthine said.

The first stage of work will take 18 months to two years to complete and be open in time for Christmas in 2015.
