Vital millions arrive: $12.8m injection for region’s infrastructure

Chinchilla News, 24 October 2013

THE Chinchilla district will cash in on a booming energy industry with $12.8 million in infrastructure projects announced today as part of the Royalties for the Regions program.

Of that funding, $6.9 million will come from the state government, $4.27m from the energy sector and $1.58m from the Western Downs Regional Council.

Mayor Ray Brown, speaking from the Local Government Association of Queensland Annual Conference in Cairns, said the funding would address some of the issues associated with rapid population growth and industry boom.

“It’s a good outcome, but this is certainly justified, there’s no doubt about that,” Cr Brown said. “In fact, I’d say we’d be justified to get a lot more, but at least this is a good start.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney made the announcement during a flying visit to Chinchilla yesterday for QGC’s Kenya Water Treatment Plant opening.

Member for Warrego Howard Hobbs said he was delighted to see Royalties for the Regions in action.

The funding will be split across seven projects.
