PM names Twiggy Forrest to head indigenous jobs review

8th October 2013, The Queensland Times

Fortescue Metals boss Andrew Forrest.

MINING figure Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest will lead a wide-ranging review of Commonwealth indigenous training and employment programs, Prime Minister Tony Abbott confirmed on Tuesday.

A statement from Mr Abbott’s office confirmed Mr Forrest will chair the review, which may lead to training and employment programs being cut.

Mr Abbott said while he was committed to boosting job opportunities for indigenous Australians, he no longer wanted “training for training’s sake”.

The review will look at all Commonwealth employment and training programs with a view to ensuring they are “targeted” and administered to connect indigenous people with “real and sustainable jobs”.

In the statement, Mr Abbott said there was much goodwill, but the challenge was converting good intentions into “practical change for the better”.

Mr Forrest’s work will be overseen by one of Mr Abbott’s Parliamentary Secretaries, Alan Tudge, and will work with the new indigenous advisory council, led by Warren Mundine.

It will report its recommendations back to Mr Abbott by early April next year.
